1. The noun is pronounced with the stress on the first syllable, and the verb with the stress on the second syllable.

This transitive use of the verb, with the object of the protest as the grammatical object, is a relatively recent development that is widely accepted in AmE but has not yet become established in BrE, although it is beginning to appear:
• The ruin of Belfast's Black Mountain protested by the local community —Independent, 1991
• At the core really is the ‘ownership’ of cricketers, an issue which had emerged during a previous World Cup when the Indian players protested the use of their images by sponsors —sports website, BrE 2005.
In BrE the usual construction remains one with a linking preposition at or against. Note however that protest is transitive in BrE in the sense ‘to assert or maintain’, typically with innocence as the object.
